Shweta Rawat

I am Chairperson of The Hans Foundation.

The foundation is one of the largest in India. Our aim is to improve quality of life by improving access to services in education and healthcare, as well as increasing livelihood opportunities for all citizens of India.

Tell us about any current projects or initiatives you wish to promote

We have an Integrated Village Development Program (IVDP), in Uttarakhand. This is a multi partner project. Through IVDP, we are looking at various problems in the hill state that contribute to the serious challenge of migration. Literally hundreds of villages are abandoned as people move towards the plains in search of a better life for themselves and their children. Lack of Employment is a big part of this. Not having good education, healthcare, even things like electricity, clean water and sanitation, are all deterrents to a good life. THF has invited expert NGOs to join us in finding solutions to these problems.

What has been your biggest challenge in achieving your success?

THF is a private organization and tries to implement its budget in the most productive and effective way. However to really achieve large-scale impact, we need more public private partnerships, government and corporate support for our work.

What has been your greatest achievement personally?

Setting up this foundation in 2009. I have seen it grow into the responsible, socially active body it is today.

If you weren’t doing what you do now, what would you be doing?

I love to read so hopefully I would be working for a publishing house or writing my own novel.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

My grandmother and mother. The women of my family are doers. They encouraged me to find my place in the world, and to act on my dreams.

What does the future hold for you?

For now my future means being a good and responsible parent to my two and four legged children! I also want The Hans Foundation to make a quality impact through its passion and work.
