Pravasi women – Shabnam Samuel, Founder, Panchgani Writers Retreat

Shabnam Samuel

Shabnam SamuelI came to the US almost 27 years ago. Armed with a degree in advertising, I had dreams of working in the advertising haven of Madison Avenue in New York. I now run a Social Media training company in the US where I help companies and individuals promote themselves or their products on various social media platforms. I write creative non fiction and my love for writing led me to host an annual writers’ retreat in Panchgani, India.

Where are you living currently and why did you choose that location?

I live in Washington D.C and destiny chose that location.

Why did you move away from India?

Dreams I think.

What do you miss most about living abroad?

My family and the sights and sounds of daily living in India. Living in the US can be quite isolating at times. There are months in the winter when I don’t even see my neighbours.

What do you like most about your current location?

The proximity to the best museums in the world. The one metro ride away from my writing community and the fact that I live in such a diverse community.

Did you face any particular challenges moving away from India?

Not really. The world has shrunk with the advent of the Internet and diversity is now being celebrated. In the beginning (27 years ago!) it was all about assimilation. Things have changed now. I no longer feel that I have to struggle twice as much as my American neighbour.

Who in particular helped you during your transition?

The Indian community. They all rallied around us. From buying pots and pans to giving us a car to making sure we had winter coats, is something I will never forget.

Do you live in an Indian community?

I don’t really live in an Indian community, but do have a lot of personal Indian friends. I am also very involved in the classical dance world and hence keep my culture alive that way too.

Do you think you’ll go back to India one day?

Yes, India is home. My soul is wandering around there, and I do have to unite with it.
