Liberating women, liberating the world

A new study concluded that $12 trillion could be added to global GDP by 2025 by advancing women’s equality.

(McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) report, The power of parity: How advancing women’s equality can add $12 trillion to global growth, September 2015)

Liberating Women, liberating the worldBy nature, a woman is naturally designed to readily adapt to changing situations, and find her own comfortable space just about anywhere. She inherently understands, perceives and devises – and is a born leader who takes charge of any situation in her life with intuitive ease and calm. Together, these qualities are the perfect recipe for a leader, and make women the perfect people to take on not just their traditional roles, but as new age business-women.

Breaking innate conditioning

In their school-days, girls shone in academics over boys. Somewhere along the way, a phenomenon called culture conditioning took over, and the “khandaankachiraag” sped past. Soon he became the bread-earner, and the woman receded into the wings. But history is proof that each time a woman is determined, she leaps over convention, breaks boundaries and surprises the world. The new generation of business women around the world are now entering the corporate battlegrounds and winning their own victories. Long been objectified, she is finally breaking the shackles of primitive conditioning and embracing their real selves.

Built to blaze

Women entrepreneurs, women leaders, mothers choosing second careers…the female force is slowly and steadily going up, as a veritable wave of fresh new energies and perspectives. But there is an equally powerful force that is pulling it down. That force is not men or society, it is… other women. Women bosses are certainly not favourites, women colleagues are competition, and juniors are plain irritating. There is a need for the force to be transformed from an opposite current to a flow that encourages, inspires and accelerates the other. When women change their outlook and get inspired from what they really are – and who women around them really are, then they emerge as complete, empowered individuals. The competition breaks down, and a beautiful sisterhood blossoms.

Women on top

When this happens, the current scenario of only five to ten percent of women reaching the top of the business ladder can turn on its head. Work politics will turn to work purpose and profits will be complemented by passion. Women can nurture workplaces that promote better ethics, and support change with courage and clarity. They gravitate to creating value and make that their purpose. Women need to love and care their true being and the power they can create. That can unlock a wave of advancement like no other.

The other occupation

As the woman is gradually respected more at work, she will also be celebrated for living up the ultimate challenge – her choice to trade her career for her family. Her decision to consciously parent her children will not be looked upon as a choice-less responsibility but a real and courageous choice. As this culture changes, it will emerge as a choice that is flexible, meaningful and passionate towards building this society and community.

A sign of good times

When Justin Pierre James Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister was recently asked why he put 15 men and 15 women in his Cabinet, his answer was packed with meaning for the times to come: “Because it’s 2015.”
