Inspirational Woman: Aditi Chopra | Author of NRI fiction and non-fiction books

Aditi Chopra FeatureTell us about yourself, your background and what you do currently

I feel that a variety of life experiences have probably led me to pursue a diverse set of professions over the years. After finishing my engineering degree in India, I moved to California for a career in the software industry. I had the privilege of holding various leadership positions and challenging assignments in the corporate world. There was always a desire to try something new and challenging and a few years ago, I discovered a yearning to write. I started my journey with non-fiction books and later ventured into fiction writing as well.

You have written several books, which one is your personal favourite?

I am proud of all my work whether it is fiction or non-fiction but a couple of books deserve special mention. My leadership book, Leading Without Authority has become quite popular since it is an obscure topic. You will not find many books on how to acquire the skill to lead in situations where leaders don’t have authority over others. I happen to be in such situations at work and I was lost in the beginning until I found my groove. My book is based on my experiences and I am glad that it can help others.

5056560795The other book that will always be special to me is my debut fiction story, Lost In London. This book was not only my first fictional story, it was well liked by readers and provided me with the right amount of motivation to keep writing.

What has been your biggest challenge in achieving your success?

I may be unique in how I approach work, but if there is no challenge than I get bored. The thrill of learning a new skill and applying is what motivates me every day. I don’t always succeed the first time but the drive to achieve keeps me going and therefore I am able to overcome obstacles.

What has been your greatest achievement personally?

5056560797A few years ago, I would have never even dreamed of writing fiction, given my analytical mind and an engineering background. We are talking about one profession requiring the left side of the brain and the other skill is completely right brain centric. It took a lot of hard work on my part and retraining of my brain to learn how to write fiction and therefore I would have to consider that as my greatest achievement.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

I draw inspirations from various avenues and leaders around me. It really depends on which field and which skill we are looking at. Over the years I have learnt a lot from my mentors. As they say, you learn from experience as well as emulation. In the last decade or so, I was really inspired by Daniel Goleman’s concept of emotional intelligence. I connected right away with the concept and his book was a great motivator.
