Female entrepreneur: Varuna D Jani, Founder, Varuna D Jani Fine Diamond Jewellery

Varuna D Jani

Varuna D Jani I come from a family of jewellers and my earliest memories in life are surrounded by jewellery. At the tender age of eight, I would accompany my father, Ramchand Popley, to work with him where he was building a brand that would later become iconic and a leader in the Indian market. I was surrounded by jewels, gem stones and designs that would inspire me and I started to sketch jewellery designs of my own.

My passion for the craft developed at this tender age but I didn’t come to fully realise how strongly I loved it until 2006 when my father asked me to come back from Dubai to work for him. I was amazed by how naturally it came to me and adorning came through in all my designs. The lack of knowledge in the Indian industry and generic designs propelled me further to create jewellery that would truly reflect the personality and tastes of each woman. I joined work officially in 2006, but I think the passion has run deep since the age of eight.

I went on to launch my own brand “Varuna D Jani” in 2008 to create jewellery for the women of today. It hasn’t been easy making a name for myself in this male dominated industry but it has been worth every second of the struggle.

I loved creating new designs and I loved helping women look their best with stunning jewellery on their big occasions.

Tell us about the brand, Varuna D Jani

I launched my own brand Varuna D Jani with a flagship store in Bandra, Mumbai in 2008 with a vision to create jewellery for Indian women that would reflect their individuality that is steeped in European sensibility and classic finishes. I was the first Adornologist to set up a brand in India that created jewellery for each client. I do not believe that women need to settle when it comes to their jewellery and nor do I believe that one piece suits all. I believe that each woman needs to be treasured and that she deserves a piece that she can call her own and that is curated specially for her.

At the Varuna D Jani design house, we do just that and much more. We have a consultation session with each client wherein they receive pictures of their inspirations and we discuss their preferences. We accordingly recommend permutations and combinations to their inspiration to create jewellery that truly reflects their style.
Our target audience is women who have a taste for opulence and who are confident and unafraid to express themselves.

Why did you set up the company?Varuna D Jani Fine Diamond Jewellery

Once I started working for my father and with jewellery again, I realised that there was no turning back for me. I loved creating new designs and I loved helping women look their best with stunning jewellery on their big occasions. This, coupled with the need for personalised jewellery in India, drove me to launch my own brand that would not only design jewellery but also adorn the women they cater to.

The biggest challenge for me personally has been maintaining work-life balance in this male dominated industry.

What has been your biggest challenge in achieving your success?

The biggest challenge for me personally has been maintaining work-life balance in this male dominated industry. Bring an entrepreneur with three daughters is no easy feat. I am very lucky to have a great family that is very understanding and supportive of my passion.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

I have been awarded three awards in 2008, as the “Woman Super Achiever” by the Asia Retail Congress 2009, “The Brand Leadership Award” and “The Best Wedding Jewellery of the Year”. Mine was also the only brand to be nominated in eight categories in 2010 in the Retail Jewellery Award. Snce then there have been many others including winner of the ‘Best Wedding Jewellery 2011’ at the Indian Retail Jeweller Awards 2011, ‘International Achievers Award, 2010-2011 in Business Excellence’, awarded in Singapore in June 2011, ‘Indian Achievers Award, 2011 for Emerging Company’, awarded in New Delhi in May 2011. I was also very proud to receive has the ‘Power Brands Leadership Award’ in Dubai in August 2012 for ‘Rising Jewellery Entrepreneur of the Year 2012’ and the GJTCI Excellence Award in 2014.

My biggest inspiration is always the women I work with. They are such brilliant women in their own way and they are so unique and special.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration is always the women I work with. They are such brilliant women in their own way and they are so unique and special. I feel they all need something just as unique and special as them to make them look and feel their best.

How do you balance your work life and home life?

Being an entrepreneur is a very time consuming job. It’s very important to balance between family and work and that’s the formula for success – you have to get your priorities right. There are a few things – God, family and work – that matter the most. And most of the unhappiness comes when you are not able to balance these three. So this is the mantra of how you get into the right path of success. During the week we have just one day off on a Sunday so I try to keep half of a day for myselfand the other half for my family. We have our dinners together every night because that is the time when you come home that is a bit late and only then you get time with the family. But otherwise Sundays are family days.

What advice do you have for women starting out on their own?

Hard work. Perseverance. Adaptability. Find your niche, take the high ground and aim to be a leader in your field.

Can you recommend any organisations or networking groups that have particularly helped you on your journey?

There exists a need gap. Vocation and incubation are necessary in the high-capital, intensive category of jewellery. There is no platform that exists to bring practical learning together with theoretical learnings. It has therefore been my aim to create this platform in the near future for young deserving designers, where they can train, learn and fly on their own.

If you could ask for one thing to help propel your business what would it be?

A distribution network for designers is non-existent in the category of jewellery. Deserving new entrants find it extremely difficult unless they come with a celebrity connection.

Hard work. Perseverance. Adaptability. Find your niche, take the high ground and aim to be a leader in your field.

What does the future hold for you?

Belief in myself and my constant striving towards my goal is what I do. The future shall unfold itself.

About Varuna D Jani

Taking to jewellery designing from the age of eight, I feel that I have an innate sense of design and love, together with a beautiful blend of Indian and International sensibilities in my designs. A lot of hard work and determination goes behind making this brand work.

I launched my signature label keeping the Indian global woman in mind in 2006, and opened a flagship store in 2008 with an exemplary range of luxury jewellery. What makes my brand unique is that “Varuna D Jani Fine Jewellery” is the only personalised jewellery brand brand in India.

I am a believer in the unique, and like extending my personal touch to every single client who walks in to buy my jewellery. I am a strong advocate of women wearing jewellery that accentuates their looks and style and I believes that this is what builds a bond of trust with every client.
