Tell us about yourself and your background
Every person’s background is related to his/her family.
My father was initially a banker for about ten years who worked in India and abroad. He later became an entrepreneur even before I was born. My mother is a public diplomat at large, and follows Arts, Culture and actively pursues Indian causes Internationally.
The only child ( female ) got a break when bending all rules and norms my parents admitted me in a boarding school where I spent the last four years of my schooling. The World was revealed to me there and circumstances forced me to think, act and be independent in thought and spirit.
An entrepreneurship spirit was always lying dormant within me and as luck would have it i got married into a Jain business family. Though traditional they encouraged me to make use of my Business Studies degrees and fulfil my dreams as an entrepreneur.
Tell us about the company you have set up – when did you set it up, what products or services do you provide, what is your target market?
I set up a proprietorship Co by the name of Saraswati Crafts while I was still doing my MBA in 2012. Later I successfully executed export shipments to UK.
I am now venturing into Fashion Jewellery under the Brand Name “Jewel Thief ” , with the endeavour to develop a range which appeals to all ages and moods.
Why did you set up the company? / What drove you to become an Entrepreneur?
The drive behind me becoming an Entrepreneur was simple- my dad. Ever since i was a child I used to see my father going to his office or business trip – ever since then I wanted to become like him. Now finally I am at a stage where I have started walking/following his footsteps.
What has been your biggest challenge in achieving your success?
The biggest challenge till now was deciding what will appeal to my consumers. It was very easy to purchase things that one normally wears, however I wanted to bring things that were a bit different and unique.
What has been your greatest achievement so far?
It’s too early to comment on it. However saying this i would like to add that till now people have appreciated the collection in “Jewel Thief”. And personally my achievement would be to have such a strong support system (my parents, husband and in-laws) without whom nothing would have happened.
Who has been your biggest inspiration?
My dad. He has taught me to be independent
How do you balance your work life and home life?
Having a support system has helped me to balance it out.
What advice do you have for women starting out on their own?
Seeing myself I would like to say that just follow your dreams even if the road to achieving the dream isn’t paved with flowers and chocolates.
If you could ask for one thing to help propel your business what would it be?
The ability to understand what sells and what doesn’t and unlimited resources.
What does the future hold for you?
That time will only tell.
Based in New Delhi, India, I have an MBA degree in International Business. I am an avid traveller and love to pick up unique jewellery during my travels. Steadily I developed the concept and desire to generate a range which is unique, varied and universal. The concept is to steal designs and ideas from various cultures and mother nature.
