Female Entrepreneur: Dishita Solanki – Founder of Dishita Solanki Make-up Hub

Dishita Solanki-featuredTell us about yourself and your background

I’m an International beauty consultant and make up coach. My Mantra is, “When You Look Good, You Feel Good. When You Feel Good; You Become The Very Best Version Of You!”

Tell us about Make Up Hub

My career began almost a decade ago as a make up artist in a UK retail establishment with the make up giant Bobbi Brown. When I arrived on the make up scene I quickly established a reputation for flawless and simple make up application. Within a year of being with Bobbi Brown, my zeal and enthusiasm was instantly recognised and as a result I began training budding new artists under the Bobbi Brown umbrella across England.

I relocated and shifted my base completely to India in 2011 and began working with many prominent businesswomen, artists, the international Bobbi Brown Artist Team, a well-known UK fashion house Arinder Bhullar and beauty clinics such as Beauty Box cosmetics.

Women have become multi-faceted, from looking after the home, children and husband, to having a career and taking care of external house matters; and the last thing they often have time for is themselves, especially thinking bout hair, make up and attire. I wanted to empower these women to become the very best version of themselves aesthetically and show them how easy it is to put a twist on your look to create a personal style statement. I believe it’s important to give time to yourself on the outside, which itself will give you more self confidence and as a result you’ll be the best version of yourself in whichever field you are in.

I saw an opportunity slot in the market and used my initiative to start a business to provide a unique service for women: my sole aim was to give women the right techniques, knowledge and confidence to be their own make-up artist!

I offer a unique, personal make-up lesson called Personal Make-up StylingTM Lesson,  using five essential elements of make up application:

  1. Undertones
  2. Textures
  3. Colours
  4. Features
  5. Angles

A personal Make-up StylingTM lesson helps women use these five elements as per their own skin tone, creating their own style and look statement.

An expert at bridal make-up, I have also worked on over 500 brides across the world and my work is inimitable. I was selected as one of the top five make up artists in India at the first ever India Online Fashion Week.  Besides being selected exclusively by the best cosmetic clinic in India – Studio Aesthetique – as their beauty consultant and make-up styling coach, I have also been selected as the make-up mentor for the reality TV show, India’s Next Top Model.

Ensure that whatever you are starting is something you’re completely passionate about. Then, sleep, breathe and eat that passion, and success will definitely be yours!

What drove you to become an entrepreneur

Because I want every women to feel their best, and I know what I do can to contribute to that to a large extent. As an entrepreneur, the creative freedom I enjoy is what drives me each day to be my best.

What has been your biggest challenge in achieving your success?

Trying to change the mind-set of women. Educating women about the value of aesthetics whilst celebrating their own individuality.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

Vogue India approached me in 2012.  I was amongst 10 women in India, chosen from different spheres of life, whom they considered to be at the top of their game. I had a dedicated full page editorial with a write up. I was overwhelmed as this happened within my first 18 months of stepping into India!

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

My mother. She always said, “Simple living – high thinking”. It’s very easy to get carried away in this ever-changing world we live in, where we are constantly trying to be something we are not. Amidst this chaos my mother constantly told me to always have a minimal simplistic lifestyle. That eventually became the anthem for my business. I want all women to have a simple approach to making an aesthetic difference, where, as a result they become the very best version of themselves in the long run.

Because I want every women to feel their best, and I know what I do can to contribute to that to a large extent. As an entrepreneur, the creative freedom I enjoy is what drives me each day to be my best.

How do you balance your work life and home life?

My work is my passion. I do not see it as ‘work’, so I do not differentiate between work and home life.

What advice do you have for women starting out on their own?

Ensure that whatever you are starting is something you’re completely passionate about. Then, sleep, breathe and eat that passion, and success will definitely be yours!

Can you recommend any organisations or networking groups that have particularly helped you on your journey

The British Business Group (BBG) has certainly given me great exposure within their community.

If you could ask for one thing to help propel your business what would it be?

Investors, investors, investors!

What does the future hold for you?

It’s always been a dream to have my own brand of herbal make up products that are manufactured in India. I will also be launching in-house seminars and association with Girl NGOs, especially beauty coaching for burn and acid victims across Mumbai through NGOs, finding sponsorships for under-privileged women to go through plastic surgery.

About Dishita Solanki

Having grew up in the UK, I believe I’m a blend of East and West. My parents always tried to instil Indian art form and culture within me to ensure I was rooted to where I came from, resulting in taking a keen interest in learning how to play the flute and sitar.  I also trained as a Kathak dancer from the age of nine. I strongly believe in living a healthy lifestyle and qualified as a yoga instructor in 2007. Although I have a science degree I did not pursue a career in science but followed my passion within the make up industry. I have a special love for monkeys and am obsessed with playing Sudoku. New endeavours I want to indulge in in 2015 are learning to sail and horse riding.
