Dancer Geeta Chandran has been chosen to receive the Swami Shri Meghashyam Sharma Award, named after the renowned poet and musician of Braj.
The award recognizes Chandran’s deep and sustained commitment to reviving dance performances in Vrindavan temples, under the valued guidance of her Guru, Acharya Shri Shrivatsa Goswami of Sri Caitanya Prema Samsthana, and who is also an earlier recipient of this honour.
The award includes an Angavastarm, a Tamra Patra and a cash purse of Rs. 21,000.
Following the award ceremony, Geeta and her Natya Vriksha Dance Company will also be performing the Raas Nritya celebrating life, beauty and aesthetics.
Recipient of the national Padmashri Award from the President of India in 2007, Chandran engages in the widest range of dance-related activities: performing, teaching, conducting, singing, collaborating, organizing, writing and speaking to new youth audiences.
As part of her life mission of “en-dancing the universe,” Chandran campaigns relentlessly for arts education and is a national icon advocating for recognition of the multiple specialized skills that classical dances bestow.
