However, not all of it is entirely true. There are several advantages of working for a major player, but there are also many drawbacks. And you should know that there are a significant number of reasons why you would be better off being hired by a small company instead – such as these mentioned below.

# 1 – They will listen to you

When you work for a small company, you are always on the first row. Your ideas and opinions will count, and your boss will be happy to listen to what you have to say. There will be no need to be waiting and look for the right words – you and your work will always be the most relevant.

# 2 – Hierarchy won’t be an issue

You will have easy access to the owner in a small company. You won’t need to fight your way through a line of managers and directors in order to get noticed by the CEO. Booking an appointment with their secretary and having to find a very good reason to be invited to their office are also out of the table.

# 3 – There will be more flexibility

If you need to take a day off, work from home, or be present during different hours of the day will be much easier to negotiate it with a small company. As you know, they are more than happy to accommodate your requests (considering that you are an important asset to the company) and that there will be no need to go through regulations so to get it approved.

# 4 – There will be more challenges

Except in very rare cases, a small company has no intention to be small forever. What it wants is to grow and as soon as possible. And, in order to achieve this goal, many challenges will have to be faced along the way, from increasing the revenue and number of customers, until investments on brand awareness and public relations.

As a consequence, you will be able to experience this process, to be part of it, and to make a relevant contribution – which will love great on your cover letter if you decide to change job in the future. Meaning that you will be able to brag about how you helped that company to go from A to B with figures included. # 5 – You will know how everything works

Because the company is still small, its processes will also be very simple. There will be fewer departments, suppliers, employees, and lines of sales and production. This way, you will be able to learn how everything works from the beginning to the end in that type of industry.

You will be going for lunch with people of different expertise and get to know more about their work in a way that you wouldn’t be able in a big company. As there is very little competition in small companies, everyone will be ready to share their knowledge with you – so be prepared to ask and be asked away.

# 6 – You will be doing a bit of everything

But you won’t only be watching how other people do their job. Due to limited staff, it is very likely that you will be invited to take of tasks that might not have much to do with your current position. And even though it might upset you at first sight, soon you will realise that you will be acquiring new skills that might be relevant at some stage.

# 7 – You will be rewarded faster

And, above all, because you will be noticed all the time, and you will be given more opportunities to suggest and implement new projects, the chances are that you will be rewarded much faster in a small company.

It might be in the form of a promotion, or a raise, or else, but they won’t be able to ignore what you have been doing for the company. Plus, small companies tend to treasure their talents and will go that extra mile in order not to lose them to big players.

# 8 – You will know what is going on

Another advantage of working for a small company is that you will be aware of what is going on all the time. And that is for good and for bad. If the company is doing great (and making money enough to give you a raise), you will know. If the business is about to sink (and it is time for you to get you resume updated), you will know as well.

Sometimes, it might be a bit too much information, but, soon you will notice that being well informed will make much difference in your career. And that it would never be possible with a big company, in which sensitive data is disclosed only to top executives.

To Sum Up

As you can see, there are several reasons why you should consider sending your CV to small companies if you are looking for a job. They might not have a brand to add to your resume, neither an impressive package of benefits, but you will enjoy being part of a growing process for starters.

You will also know everyone in the company, which make you feel like you got a new Family. You will learn more, be rewarded faster, and get full access to the CEO – who might not even want to be called like this.

Your skill set will improve, and you will know everything about your industry. And it will be great if you decide to try for a management position or even to open your own business in the future.

So make sure that you give it a try, at least, a couple of times, in your career. The benefits will surprise you, and you might never want to be hired by a big company ever again.
