Apurva Purohit, President of Jagran Prakshan, to open the Rising Star India Awards winner’s celebration

Apurva Purohit

WeAreTheCity India is proud to announce that Apurva Purohit, President of Jagran Prakshan, will open the Rising Star Awards winners’ celebration.

Purohit will provide the opening address of our prestigious evening reception, taking place on 14 November in Mumbai, which will celebrate the achievements of the top 50 Rising Stars for 2017. Winners will be invited to collect their awards and celebrate alongside our sponsors, judges and esteemed guests.

Purohit is the President of the Jagran Group, one of India’s largest multi-media conglomerates. With over three decades of experience in the media and entertainment industry, she currently manages a diverse portfolio, which includes print, radio, digital and outdoor.

Under Apurva’s leadership, Radio City witnessed tremendous growth and became one of the largest and most profitable networks in the FM industry with a turnover clocking 5 times its original worth. In a decade of running Radio City she has been able to create shareholder value of 2000 crores, one of the very few media entities in the country to do so.. During her stint as the CEO of Radio City, the organization was ranked amongst the Top 20 places to work as a part of the Great Place to Work Survey, 2015.

Apurva was one of the Top 30 Most Powerful Women in Business as per the Business Today Group in 2016. In addition to her prolific career in the media space, she is also an Independent Director on the boards of Mindtree Ltd., a global information technology solutions company with revenues of over USD 430 million and Meru Travel Solutions Ltd, India’s first radio cab service.

She is also the author of the national bestselling book “Lady, You’re not a Man” – the Adventures of a Woman at Work. The book is an insight into modern day corporate work culture. It offers a pragmatic perspective on managing work-life balance through emotional intelligence and maturity in managing relationships both with oneself, and with others.

She lectures extensively on “Leadership Skills”, “The Diversity Triad – How to Cope with the Challenges Working Women face “and “Building Great Places to Work”.

Speaking about the Rising Star Awards, Purohit said, “It’s a pleasure to address such talented and strong women and be a part of a movement that recognizes women achievers.”

“Globally, businesses recognize the impact, a higher number of women in the workforce can have on the overall growth of the business.”

“However, rhetoric alone is not going to shatter the glass ceiling.”

“It’s time we moved beyond symbolism and worked towards levelling the playing field along with shedding our biases which form the crux of the issue.”

“Being senior women professionals it’s our responsibility to give a leg up to the younger lot.”

“Yes, the glass ceiling exists but we have managed to get our foot in the door and we should use this as an opportunity to build, create and charge forward. How importantly we need to focus on the leaky pipeline that exists in the middle of the diversity pyramid”

“Being a rebel or portraying ourselves as one will not help us to succeed in our work life but building relationships and working through collaboration will.”

The Rising Star Awards shines a spotlight on the achievements of fifty women from a cross sector of industries who represent the female talent pipeline across India.

By highlighting the accolades of inspirational female talent, WeAreTheCity hopes to encourage organisations and business leaders to invest in and recognise women as leaders of tomorrow and individual contributors within their respective industries. WeAreTheCity feels it has a responsibility to ensure that female talent, regardless of age and background, receives the necessary support and skills to transition into key decision-making roles within our organisations.

The shortlist for the 2017 awards has recently been announced and these 100 shortlisted women will now face a further round of judging accompanied by public votes of support. You can vote for any of our Rising Star shortlist here.

The overall winners will be announced on 16 October 2017.
